The other day, in UK, there was on Channel 4, a show on the best pop idols of the british scene (based on sales of singles - and thus, objective, rather than catering, as most of these shows do, for the latest fad in popular taste). And the results were:
No.1 - the best ever - Sir Cliff - with a staggering sales of almost 21 million singles (but done over the whole career, with a best single in every decade)
No.2 - The Beatles - with 20.8 million
No.3 - Elvis - 19.3 million
And then, there is a big drop to the next one
No.4 - Madonna - 14.6 mil (almost 5 million less, almost 25% less) - they don't do them - pop idols - like they used to do them!
No.5 - Elton John - 13.5 (Elton sold only about 60% of Sir Cliff's records!)
No.6 - Michael Jackson - 11.3
No.7 - Queen - 10.3
No.8 - ABBA - 10.0
No.9 - Paul McCartney - 9.8
No.10 - David Bowie - 9.4
And then, there were Rod Steward, Rolling Stones, Kylie, Steview Wonder
